Class Overview:

The basics classes focus on dance technique, refining the isolations that make up bellydance, gaining muscle memory, working on correct posture, stamina, speed and range. The Tribal Fusion classes focus on tribal fusion style bellydance, using both improvisation and choreography to draw together traditional raks sharqi with folk dances from the Middle East, dances from North Africa, India, and Romani culture as well as western influences such as hip hop and ballet. We have a pretty vigorous warm up in each class with strength, grace and flexibility building exercises. Using yogic stretching, pilates, dance conditioning and strength training, we'll find muscles you didn't know you had and learn to be proud of our strength and our bodies while improving dace skill, stamina and core strength. It may be easier to start with the beginner classes, but adventurous beginners or students with some dance experience are also welcome to come to the Thursday night class.

DANCE CONDITIONING AND TECHNIQUE CLASS - Ashland

Join us on ladies night for some fun! After class take a soak or swim in Wellsprings pools! This class is for everyone from beginners to advanced dancers to those just looking for some fun and good exercise. We can all benefit from going back to the basics and refining our movements and isolations. Each class will focus on one isolation or movement, exploring muscular execution, technique, variations, layering and traveling. We'll work on making our movements more crisp and clean and learn to perform them in a safe manner to keep us dancing longer. Come strengthen your body and your self worth with this wonderful dance form! (We will not be working with zils in this class)

BEGINNER CLASS - Ashland
Tuesdays 7:15-8:45pm @ the Balancing Act - 6 week sessions
($50 paid in full at beginning of six week session)

In this class students will learn the foundation movements and isolations that are the building blocks of all styles of bellydance and get used to opening the chest and belly. Students will also learn "basic" tribal style dance steps which are elaborated on in the intermediate and advanced classes, and are the foundation for group improvisation. By the end of the six week session students will have started to build a vocabulary of dance movements. We'll go over basic zil (finger cymbal) patterns and how to use them with basic movements and at the last class of each session we'll briefly go over costuming and there will be shopping available after class. Classes will consist of a warm up/work out, foundation posture and movement intro and drills, basic movement intro and review, dance breakdown and practice. Students are encouraged to purchase their own zils if planning to continue on to the intermediate class but there will be extra zils available for use in class. Please note that there are no drop-ins after the first class in a session. If you are planning to sign up for a session and must miss the first class, please contact me before coming to class.

INTERMEDIATE CLASS - Ashland
Thursday 7:15-8:45pm @ the Balancing Act - Ongoing - drop-in $10
class punch cards available:
5 classes - $45, 10 classes for $80

The intermediate/all levels class will focus on covering and refining the basics and getting comfortable with improvisation and group dancing. The basic dance steps covered in the beginner series will be elaborated on and each week students will learn more variations within a certain movement group. Classes will consist of a warm up/work out, foundation movement drills, dance breakdown and drills and/or choreography and improvisation practice. When time permits, the last 15-30 minutes of class students will have a chance to call out specific movements they'd like to work on and we'll break them down and incorporate them into the dance practice for that night. We will sometimes practice with zils or props in this class - advance notice will be given for prop classes.

ADVANCED CLASS - Ashland
(experience in this format is required)
Wednesday 7:15-8:45pm *This is a closed class* - drop-in $10
class punch cards available:
5 classes - $45, 10 classes for $80

In this ongoing class we take a look at the dynamics and variations of each movement, what can be done with it and how to pair it with other movements, traveling, layering, etc. We'll focus more on improvisation, building choreographies and personal interpretation. Exercises include solo improvisation, short choreography building in small groups, advance zil rhythms and more. Students coming to this class should be excited to dance and ready to be challenged. When chances to perform arise, the advance class students will have the option of performing choreography or improve piece that we'll practice in class. Class will consist of a warm up/work out, drills, dance breakdown, choreography and improvisation and performance prep exercises. Occasionally we will practice with zils or props in this class - advance notice will be given.

If you love to dance then you will LOVE bellydance! It teaches us to celebrate the curves and softness we seem so eager to harden, to open our chests and bellies after so many years of strapping down and sucking in, and to move without shame or fear. Learning bellydance can be challenging sometimes but I will always take time to break down and explain the movements, and I try to provide hand outs when we're working on series of movements. I'm available before and after class for questions, and 24 hours a day through email. This dance style is my love and I teach classes with the goal of inspiring that love in other dancers, building appreciation for our bodies and having some fun!
